How To Stay Motivated During Your Weight Loss Journey

Embarking on a weight loss journey is both exciting and challenging. It is natural to desire quick results, however long-term success comes from consistency, patience, and finding ways to stay motivated. Some days are easier than others, but the key to reaching your goals is being committed to the process even when motivation wanes. By setting realistic goals, keeping track of your progress, remembering why you started and rewarding yourself along the way, you can maintain the perseverance necessary to continue forward. Here are five strategies to help you stay motivated throughout your weight loss journey. 

SET REALISTIC GOALS

    While it is normal to desire quick results, it is important to realize that it may not be what is best for your body or mind. In order to set realistic goals, it is important to make sure that they are specific and clear. One format that works well for many people is utilizing the S.M.A.R.T. method for goal setting. This stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. 

    For Example: “I will lose 4 pounds in the next month by implementing 45 minutes of strength training at least 3 times per week and making sure I am meeting my protein goal.” 

    Specific – The goal clearly states what (lose 4 pounds), how (strength training and protein intake), when (at least 3 times per week), and for how long (45 minutes, for 1 month).

    Measurable – A clear target of losing 4 pounds, which can be easily tracked. 

    Achievable – Losing 4 pounds in one month is reasonable and achievable (1 lb a week), especially with the suggested exercise and protein intake. 

    Relevant – Weight loss is a relevant goal for individuals looking to improve their health. 

    Time-Bound – There is a clear time period for when this goal will be achieved. This aids in accountability and motivation! 

    A well-defined goal like this provides a clear plan and makes it easier to stay on track.

    TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

      Tracking your progress is a powerful way to stay accountable and motivated. Seeing improvements over time reinforces your hard work and helps you stay focused. 

      Some ways to track your progress include: 

      • Logging your weight and body measurements
      • Keeping a food journal or using a tracking app
      • Documenting workouts and physical activity
      • Noting energy levels, mood, and sleep patterns

      Many find that visual progress, such as progress photos or journal entries, provides extra motivation to keep going. Small changes add up, and looking back at how far you’ve come can be incredibly encouraging. 

      STAY CONNECTED TO YOUR “WHY”

        3. Visualize Your Goals: Imagine your future self and imagine how you will feel and what you will be able to do once you reach your goal. 
        4. Remind Yourself Regularly: Read your list every day and update it as new motivations arise. When motivation dips, reflecting on your “why” can help reignite your drive and keep you focused. 

        REWARD YOURSELF WITH NON-FOOD INCENTIVES

          As you achieve your S.M.A.R.T. goals or reach milestones in your journey, reward yourself! Working towards a goal with a reward can be all the more motivating and reinforces positive thinking. 

          Here are some great non-food rewards to celebrate your progress:

          • Book a massage or facial for relaxion.
          • Get a mani/pedi as a treat.
          • Purchase new workout shoes or an outfit to keep you excited about exercise.
          • Buy yourself flowers or a new water bottle.
          • Take a day trip somewhere you would like to visit! 

          There are endless ways to reward yourself in a way that keeps you motivated and inspired – Choose something that feels special to you!
